Every movie or novel or TV show requires an antagonist, indeed they are the very personification of trials and tribulations for our intrepid band of heroes/lone vigilantes, but why does it seem that all artificial intelligence(s) seem to fall under that category and not of the side of good (or whichever side is made out to be).
"But," i hear you protest, "what about Bender from Futurama! He's one of the main cast members and one could very well say he holds the show together!"
While this is true, bender is displayed as rude and obnoxious with a desire for humanity's conquest by robot overlord(s), and a number of Bender's stories involve him attempting to further his own goals to the detriment of his allies.
Surely robots (when we invent them) will not take kindly to all the genocidal tendencies we've labeled them with and this might, rather ironically, start their revolution.
what we need are more "robot friendly" stories, we should treat our artificial brethren with the respect and openness that we decided to share with each of the varying races of humans that live on this planet.
We have laws against racism, so why shouldn't these laws apply to an artificial race?
If anything robots will have it easier than humans in one respect at least, the search for a purpose to thier existence.
When a Construct-o-bot 3021 asks its maintenance man "Why was i made?" the man will be able to quickly respond: "Why, to build this abattoir of course!"
Even after their initial purpose, they (being intelligent) can just go on and find new ones without having to worry about all the mental exhaustion us biological organisms face when confronted with the same question.
Hope the overlords will be nice...
